The Tampa Bay Rays continue to excel on their road trip with an extra-innings defeat against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. It took 11 innings, but the team picked up their 66th win of the year in a 13-9 victory at Coors Field.
Here is what you need to know from Tuesday's contest.
The Rays gave the start to recently acquired pitcher Freddy Peralta on Tuesday, and the outing could have gone a lot better for the former Met. Peralta couldn't get out of the fourth inning and only made it to 3.2 innings of work after giving up seven earned runs off nine hits, including two home runs, in the contest.
This now marks the second time in the last three starts for Peralta where he has allowed at least seven earned runs in an appearance. The trade to bolster the pitching rotation, especially while awaiting the injury return of Shane McClanahan, is easily seen as a low-risk, high-reward if the Rays' development team and pitching coaches can use this start to change whatever is needed. Peralta still has what it takes to be a valuable asset for the Rays down the stretch.
This was arguably his worst start at Coors Field in his MLB career after making his seventh appearance at the Rockies' home field. It is only the third time that he has even allowed an earned run or a home run at one of the hitters' friendliest ballparks.
Thankfully, the run parade went to a complete halt after Peralta was taken out of the game by Rays manager Kevin Cash, as the six-man bullpen was flawless the rest of the way against Colorado.
Cam Boozer and Casey Legumina led the way with the bulk of the innings following Peralta's short start and started off a 5.1-inning relief outing of shutout baseball. Bryan Baker picked up the save, his 32nd of the season. Newly acquired reliever Tyler Wells did not see action in the contest.
It wasn't all doom and gloom for players that were recently acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays this week at the trade deadline. In fact, the complete opposite.
In the top of the third inning, recently acquired catcher Liam Hicks picked up his first hit as a Tampa Bay Ray, batting cleanup for his new squad. The hit will be one to remember, as it was a grand slam, his 15th home run of the season.
Hicks is already showing that his power at the catcher position will be a huge improvement for the Rays' offense the rest of the way until a hopeful deep postseason run.
Tampa Bay will be back in action on Wednesday to finish the series at Coors Field against the Rockies and hopefully pick up the sweep. Nick Martinez (10-3, 2.77 ERA) will get the start and take on the right-handed pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano (11-4, 4.47 ERA) for the Rockies. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM Eastern Time.
