The Tampa Bay Rays pick up another win as they continue to move in the right direction following the All-Star Break.
The team took down the Cleveland Guardians 3-0 on Saturday, clinching the series victory at Tropicana Field. The Rays 61st win continues to keep them at the top of the American League.
Here is what you need to know about today's contest.
It has definitely seemed that way for a good portion of his starts this season. Nick Martinez was fantastic yet again in his outing against the Guardians. The right-hander picked up his 10th win of the season after throwing a 6-inning shutout, only allowing 4 hits, zero walks, and striking out 5 in the process.
It was Martinez's 11th quality start of the season, already tying his total from last season. He is two away from reaching his career high of 13 quality starts, a total he reached back in 2015, his second season in the big leagues. The Rays continue to perform well when he starts, as the team is now 16-4 when he gets the starting nod.
The trio of Cam Sulser, Garett Cleavinger and Bryan Baker were outstanding out of the bullpen as they kept the shutout and only allowed a total of 1 hit in relief. Baker picked up his 27th save of the season; he is now 2nd in MLB in that stat.
It was another outing for the Rays bats where almost every player got involved on the base paths. 7 of the 9 starters found a hit, as only Cedric Mullins and Ben Williamson were left without reaching base; however, Mullins did record an RBI.
The team finished with 9 hits, including two extra-base hits. It was a much better outing from the top of the order as well, as the trio of Yandy Diaz, Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero went for a combined 4-12 on the game with an RBI. The three still struck out 5 times, so there is still room for improvement.
It's an arms race for the AL East as both the Rays and the New York Yankees won on Saturday, and the lead still stays at two games for Tampa Bay. Kevin Cash and his crew will look for the series sweep as they will play game 3 against the Guardians on Sunday at Tropicana Park. Drew Rasmussen (8-5, 3.28 ERA) will get the start for the Rays. He will face left-hander Parker Messick (8-5, 2.68 ERA) for the Guardians. This will be the final game the two teams play each other this year in the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 12:15 PM EST and will be available on Peacock.
