Veteran center Nazem Kadri, a key member of the Colorado Avalanche's 2022 Stanley Cup lineup, rejoined the franchise Friday via a trade with the Calgary Flames.
The Flames received a pair of conditional draft picks – a second-rounder in 2027 and a first-rounder in 2028 – along with forward Victor Olofsson and the rights to unsigned prospect Max Curran.
Calgary, which also parted with a 2027 fourth-round pick, agreed to retain 20% of Kadri's remaining salary, Sportsnet reported.
The 35-year-old departs Calgary as the team's scoring leader with 41 points (12 goals, 29 assists) in 61 games this season.
Colorado is the NHL's top team as the Avs lead the NHL in goals scored and fewest goals allowed. Calgary, meanwhile, entered Friday in a tie for 30th in the league standings.
"Obviously super excited," Kadri told TSN on Friday. "You know, a team at the very top of my list. Man, I can't wait."
Kadri signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Flames in the summer of 2022 on the heels of Colorado's triumphant playoff run, during which he scored seven goals and 15 points in 16 outings.
He achieved his career high in points by tallying 87 (28 goals, 59 assists) with the 2021-22 Avalanche en route to winning the championship.
Kadri has totaled 319 goals and 751 points in 1,046 regular-season games with the Flames, Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs, who selected him with the No. 7 overall pick in 2009 and dealt him to Colorado in 2019.
Olofsson, 30, recorded 11 goals and 25 points in 60 games with the Avalanche after signing a one-year, $1.575 million contract last August.
Previously with the Buffalo Sabres and Vegas Golden Knights, Olofsson has 116 goals and 236 points in 430 career games.
The Anaheim Ducks acquired defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals in a late-night trade.
How late? Well, Carlson admitted he was asleep at the time of the trade and didn't find out until Friday morning, per TSN's Pierre LeBrun.
The Capitals received a conditional first-round pick in either the 2026 or 2027 NHL Draft and a third-round selection in 2027 in the deal. If the Ducks do not qualify for the playoffs, they will have the option to retain the 2026 pick and instead send Washington a first-round pick in 2027.
The Capitals are the only team Carlson has played for since being picked by Washington in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft.
"Since joining our organization 17 years ago, John Carlson has exemplified what it means to be a Washington Capital every day," Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said. "John's determination, leadership, persistence and skill helped our franchise reach new heights and cemented him as a cornerstone and one of the greatest players in Capitals history.
"His contributions to our organization and the Washington, D.C., community both on and off the ice have been immeasurable. We are incredibly grateful for everything John has given to our team and wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward with Anaheim."
Carlson, 36, recorded 46 points (10 goals, 36 assists) and averages 22:52 of ice time in 55 games this season. He is playing in the final season of an eight-year, $64 million contract and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
A Stanley Cup champion with Washington, Carlson is the franchise's all-time leader among defensemen in goals (166), assists (605), points (771), power- play points (273) and games played (1,143).
"John Carlson brings leadership, character, a high hockey IQ and a presence to our lineup," Anaheim general manager Pat Verbeek said. "We are very excited to add a Stanley Cup winner to complement our group and make a big push down the stretch."
With star center Sidney Crosby still sidelined with an injury and forward Evgeni Malkin facing a likely suspension, the Pittsburgh Penguins, who host the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon, decided to go big at Friday's trade deadline.
How big? Try 6-foot-8, 252 pounds big.
The Penguins acquired forward Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings for a third-round draft pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Soderblom, who has two goals and an assist in 39 games, comes in just one inch below the tallest man to play in the NHL, Hall of Famer Zdeno Chara, and will add some beef to the Pittsburgh front line.
Crosby, who suffered a right leg injury in the Olympics playing for Team Canada on a hit by Czechia's Radko Gudas, was back skating in non-contact drills during Friday's optional practice but is expected to miss a few more games. Pittsburgh will likely be without Malkin for a while after he received a major match penalty for slashing Buffalo defenseman Rasmus Dahlin across the jaw with his stick in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Sabres.
Malkin, second on the team in points with 47, including 13 goals, was scheduled to have a phone hearing with the Department of Player Safety on Friday night. He has been suspended twice in his career, most recently in 2022 for four games for cross-checking Nashville's Mark Borowiecki.
Pittsburgh is in second place heading into the game with the Flyers but has dropped back-to-back games in regulation for the first time since Jan. 10-11.
Penguins coach Dan Muse had one message for his team after the loss to the Sabres: "Be pissed off. I don't want anybody walking out of today saying this is OK. You also have to be quick to turn the page. So you get home, get some sleep, you get to the rink tomorrow.
"We've got to look at ways that we can be better," Muse added. "There's going to be games where things don't go our way. I thought that was the case for different factors (Thursday), and we've got to make sure that we're focusing in and staying level."
The Flyers, six points behind Boston for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot with 21 games to go, became sellers at the trade deadline. Philadelphia sent forward Bobby Brink, who has 13 goals and 13 assists in 55 games, to the Minnesota Wild for defenseman David Jiricek and also traded enforcer Nicolas Deslauriers to the Carolina Hurricanes for a conditional seventh- round 2027 draft pick.
The 6-foot-4, 204-pound Jiricek, 22, originally the sixth overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft by Columbus, has split time between Wild and AHL affiliate Iowa. He will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL.
The Flyers are also looking for a bounce-back game Saturday following a 3-0 home loss to Utah on Thursday. Philadelphia matched a season low with 16 shots on goal in the contest.
"It's one of those games where you have a tough time saying who had a good game," Flyers coach Rick Tocchet said. "It was one of those games where we didn't push back. Tough to swallow. Got to regroup."
This is the final of four regular-season meetings between the two teams. Pittsburgh has won two of the first three, including a 6-3 victory in the last meeting on Jan. 15 in Pittsburgh.
