Did the Patriotstrade too much for A.J. Brown?

New England ultimately sent a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick -- whichever of its two fifth-rounders ends up better -- to the Philadelphia Eagles for Brown. The first-round pick wasn't surprising, as numerous reports indicated that would be the price to land the star receiver. However, many were surprised by the inclusion of the fifth-rounder.

So, what happened?

During Tuesday's appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub's "Felger & Mazz", Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal relayed some NFL "scuttlebutt" that could provide the answer.

"A lot of people were surprised by the fifth-round pick," Bedard said. " ... The league thinks that that was Howie Roseman threatening to delay the timing. That Howie Roseman went to them, like, 'You know, I want more than a 2028 first-round pick, so, in order to do right by my owner, we're going to hang onto him through at least the mandatory minicamps around the league, see if anyone gets hurt. Could hold him until training camp -- who knows? But that's just not enough for us, so we want a sweetener.' "

Bedard reiterated that he wasn't "reporting" anything and was just relaying rumors, but the theory is interesting nevertheless.

Regardless, Brown finally is with the Patriots, and he and his new teammates can focus on preparing for the 2026 season -- which may be played without Kayshon Boutte.
