The New England Patriots have had a very busy day on Monday ahead of NFL free agency, as the league's legal tampering period officially began.
New England is reportedly adding the likes of defensive lineman Dre'Mont Jones and fullback Reggie Gilliam, while also tendering a contract for tight end Jack Westover.
On the flip side, the Patriots are reportedly releasing linebacker Jahlani Tavai and saying goodbye to tight end Austin Hooper, who is reportedly signing with the Atlanta Falcons.
New England can add Khyiris Tonga to the list of departures, as the defensive lineman is signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to multiple reports.
"Source: Ex-#Patriots DL Khyiris Tonga is leaving New England for a 3-year deal with the Chiefs worth up to $21 million," Patriots reporter Andrew Callahan of The Boston Herald posted on Bluesky.
Tonga, who signed with the Patriots last March, finished his lone season in New England with 24 combined tackles, two quarterback hits and two passes defended across 14 regular season games, including eight starts. Tonga added seven combined tackles, two quarterback hits and 1.0 sack in three playoff games this winter.
"Tonga reportedly signs with the Chiefs. Going to miss that dude. Sincerely. Just relentlessly upbeat, every day," Christopher Price of The Boston Globe wrote on Bluesky.
"Opinion/analysis: DT Khyiris Tonga landing in KC on a life-altering deal ($14m gt'd) is testament to: His persistence. 6th year, 6th team. Elite teammate. Universally liked. NE coaching. Signed to modest 1-year deal in '25. Cory Durden's rise. DT3 by end of '25," ESPN's Mike Reiss added on Bluesky.
