Everyone has their own criteria for grading NFL stars. Rankings are subjective, but there are times when most can agree. Theories about Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Jaelan Phillips represent one of those times. He's seen as a priority signing. Losing him would be a tough loss, but in this business, nothing is certain.
We're all very much aware of Jaelan Phillip's familiarity with the Vic Fangio scheme. We're also energized by what we've witnessed during his stint in Philadelphia so far. He has been vocal about wanting to stay with the Eagles. Seemingly, the only concern is his durability.
The fan base and media are hopeful that he remains an Eagle, but let's be thorough. Here are a few options if he decides to move on. Most would probably be less expensive options, but one can never tell during the free-agency frenzy.
We grade one free-agent edge rusher higher than Jaelan Phillips. That honor goes to Trey Hendrickson. Third on our list is Boye Mafe.
He won't turn 28 until November. He is also one of the better blends of youth and cost-effectiveness that Philadelphia will find on the open market this time around.
Arnold Ebiketie won't turn 28 until January, and he has never recorded more than six sacks. He only produced two last season. Then again, he did so in a rotational role, and there's interest in whether he'd stack more if given more responsibility.
Jadeveon Clowney isn't the player he once was, but he's still effective. He notched 8.5 sacks and ten QB hits for the hated Cowboys last season in 13 games with six starts. The legacy of the NFL's premier mercenary continues.
While this would have been a more exciting proposition years ago, Khalil Mack is still an exciting player if you've been paying attention. He needs to be part of a rotation now. He isn't an every-down player, but he's still good for five to seven sacks at this stage of his career.
He has produced 240 pressures over the past four seasons, and he's reportedly contemplating retirement. A possible run at a title could lure him to Philadelphia, though. He'd still be productive for a team in need of pass-rushing help, and that's exactly who the Eagles are, especially if Phillips winds up in another city.
