The Carolina Panthers made one of the biggest splashes of the offseason when they secured a massive commitment from edge rusher Jaelan Phillips. That one lured him from the Philadelphia Eagles. We first learned of the news during the league's legal tampering period. The deal spans four years and carries a total value of $120 million.

That's obviously an average annual salary of $30 million. That's the kind of contract that instantly signals a franchise's belief that a player can anchor its defense for years. For the Eagles, the news was understandably disappointing. There was hope that Phillips would be retained after a productive stretch by both the Eagles fan base and the Philadelphia media.

Jaelan Phillips explains the reason for the move in his own words.

One never knows the fate or destination of every NFL star who enters free agency's pool. The Eagles made their intentions clear. They hoped to convince Phillips to stick around for a few more reasons. Instead, the Panthers' aggressive offer ultimately changed the trajectory of Phillips' offseason and landed him in Carolina.

He spoke virtually with Charlotte-area reporters on Monday and offered some insight into how the decision unfolded. While many observers assumed the larger paycheck was the deciding factor, the talented pass rusher suggested that wasn't the only reason for his decision.

He expressed the Panthers' commitment to him and their vision for the future, which also played a major role in his ultimately decision.

“I have respect for [the Eagles], and I don’t want to disclose what they were offering or anything like that, but they definitely did want me to come back. That’s something I knew after the season that they would be making a push, but ultimately, the Panthers just came with a more attractive offer. That just shows the belief they have in me and the belief they have in their team that we’re going to invest into pieces that are going to take this team to the next level. It was kind of a no-brainer to come to the Panthers.”

From Phillips' perspective, the decision wasn't simply about leaving one contender for another opportunity. It wasn't only about making more money. It was about joining a franchise that demonstrated a willingness to build around him and make him a cornerstone piece of its defense. Carolina's front office clearly believes Phillips can be a centerpiece of its long-term plans, and the contract reflects that level of confidence. For Philadelphia, missing out on Phillips is a reminder of how competitive the modern free-agent market can be.

Even when mutual interest exists, it only takes one team willing to go a step further to change the outcome. In this case, Carolina made that move. By doing so, they secured one of the most coveted edge rushers available.
