NFL exec shares take on Rams trade for Trent McDuffie: 'I don't mind it' originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Los Angeles Rams made a massive move this offseason, landing Trent McDuffie in a blockbuster trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Les Snead sent a first-round pick and more to the Chiefs for McDuffie, and shortly thereafter signed him to a massive $124 million four-year contract extension.

As The Athletic's Mike Sando shared, one NFL executive shared a thought on this deal that many fans have felt as well. This exec doesn't mind the McDuffie trade for one clear reason.

"I don't mind it," this NFL exec said. "If you still think you are in the window and you have Matthew Stafford coming back, you have to do everything you can to try and win it one more time. They still have a first-round pick."

While the blockbuster trade was a lot, sending a first-round pick in exchange for a cornerback, it's the exact kind of move that makes sense for the Rams.

In a win-now mode, trading for a player who's one of the best at their position, even at the cost it took them to pick McDuffie up, is more than worth it.

While many NFL general managers and executives like trading down or trading away players for a lofty draft pick return, in this situation, the trade for McDuffie makes too much sense for the Rams.

Not only do they resolve their biggest worry heading into their all-in 2026 season with Stafford returning, but they still own a first-round pick, at 13th overall, to further bolster the short and long term of the franchise.

McDuffie didn't come cheap, but this kind of move makes too much sense for the Rams, and is one that this NFL executive doesn't mind the Rams making, thanks to their win-now intentions, and their extra first-rounder courtesy of the Atlanta Falcons.
