The Los Angeles Chargers get set for a huge season with high expectations. Starting quarterback Justin Herbert is reaching what could be the apex of mental and physical prime, while the Chargers' roster and coaching staff may be as good now as it has been since the Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson days.
With the team primed for what could be its best season since its last AFC title appearance, one NFL analyst started thinking of how to build the perfect Chargers roster out of the best players in the franchise's illustrious history.
Chris Spiering of Clutch Points took on the daunting task of building the Chargers' all time offense. The offense included star quarterbacks Philip Rivers and Dan Fouts, running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Austin Ekeler, wideouts Lance Alworth, Keenan Allen, Charlie Joiner and Vincent Jackson and the dynamic tight end duo of Antonio Gates and Kellen Winslow.
Spiering explained his picks with the following analysis.
"The Chargers' all-time offense is going to score a ton, and I mean a ton, of touchdowns. LaDainian Tomlinson still holds the record for the most touchdowns in a single season with 32 (2006), Austin Ekeler scored 69 in seven seasons, and receiver John Jefferson scored 10 in three straight seasons with the Bolts, back in his day. Oh, and let's not forget, nobody has more touchdowns as a QB/TE duo than Rivers and Gates with 89.
Rivers and Fouts loved to air it out. With LT and Ekeler catching passes alongside route running extraordinaries, Keenan Allen, Lance Alworth, and Charlie Joiner, this offense could be almost unstoppable. Gates and Winslow would form arguably the greatest 1-2 punch in tight-end history. Opposing defenses will have to pick and choose who they want to defend."

Interestingly enough, Herbert was not mentioned on the list. Current offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater were. That level of belief bodes well for the Chargers at offensive tackle this season.
The dynamic quarterback-tight end duos of Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow and Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates play a prominent role on the list. Both connections played a defining role in the 1980s and 2000s Chargers eras.
The backfield duo of Tomlinson and Lorenzo Neal made the list, too. The tandem helped lead one of the Chargers' best seasons in franchise history when the team went 14-2 in the 2006 season. That year, Tomlinson followed his lead blocker for a league-best 1,815 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.
Prior Chargers have left their mark, but current Los Angeles players are primed to leave a similar legacy. Herbert and company will hope to lead another playoff run in 2026.
