Newcastle United is unlikely to pursue a deal for one of Manchester City’s midfielders this summer as the Cityzens could demand a hefty fee for him.
The man in question would be Tijjani Reijnders, with the Premier League contenders expected to price the Magpies out of a move, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke.
The report comes as Newcastle continues to search for midfield reinforcements following Sandro Tonali’s departure, while Bruno Guimaraes’ future remains uncertain amid ongoing interest from Arsenal.
According to O’Rourke, Manchester City has little interest in selling Reijnders despite the Netherlands international falling out of favor during the closing weeks of last season.
Pep Guardiola’s exit and Bernardo Silva’s departure should improve Reijnders’ chances of earning a bigger role under new manager Enzo Maresca, and the uncertainty surrounding Rodri’s future in Manchester has further strengthened City’s desire to keep the Dutch midfielder.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke explained why Newcastle is unlikely to land the former AC Milan star.
“Man City are looking to strengthen in midfield, rather than weaken it right now as well, and a big money offer would have to come in to make them consider cashing in on Reijnders,” O’Rourke said.
O’Rourke added that Newcastle will ultimately need to shift its attention elsewhere if Eddie Howe wants to reshape his midfield.
“So yeah, I don’t think he’d be right at the top of the list of Newcastle reinforcements right now,” O’Rourke said.
Reijnders joined Manchester City from AC Milan in a reported €54 million (£46 million) deal last summer and finished his first season with 14 goal contributions in 50 appearances.
Although Newcastle has previously been linked with the Dutch international, now with a market value of €50 million, O’Rourke reports the fee required to tempt City into a sale is expected to put the move beyond the Magpies’ reach, leaving Howe to prioritize alternative midfield targets.
