Giving back to his home community in Newberry in Alachua County is near and dear to Corey Durden, a Newberry High School graduate who started on the defensive line for the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl this past season.
Durden, 27, hosted the second annual Corey Durden Youth Football Camp on Saturday, June 13, at the Easton Newberry Sports Complex.
"I love it here, and I love where I come from, even though I am not here as much as I would like to be," Durden said as he put on a camp T-shirt.
Durden has been in the NFL for four years with stints with the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants before signing with the Patriots.
"I just want the kids to have fun, and take this opportunity to be around a professional football player," Durden said.
Pedro Vidal, of Newberry, was at the camp with two of his three sons. He said attending the camp meant a lot to him because he thinks it is important to support someone like Durden who feels it is important to give back to the community.
"I think it's always great when you see someone who pursues their dreams and overcome adversity and continues to push forward," Vidal said. "In a city like Newberry it's so important to see someone from your hometown who are able to represent with such passion in such a great way. I want my sons to see that anything is possible."
Lotoya Williams-Brown, a former standout basketball player for the Eastside High School girls basketball team, also attended the camp with two of her sons who participate in Pop Warner football sponsored by the City of Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department.
"I want them to learn everything they can from this camp and take it and put it to use," Williams-Brown said. “It's a blessing to have a camp like this in our community.”
Durden was joined by several youth football coaches from the community, and the camp had two sessions. The first one was from 10-11:30 a.m. for ages 6-9 and the second session was held from noon-1:30 p.m. for ages 10-13.
