New York Mets’ Brett Baty gets honest about major career change he’s dealing with originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Mets have been looking for ways to get Brett Baty more opportunities defensively, and the youngster recently opened up about his transition to the outfield.
Baty, who has primarily played third base throughout his professional career, has been getting reps in the outfield as the Mets look for ways to get his bat in the lineup. While the move won’t be easy if they decide to go that route, Baty said that he’s becoming more comfortable with the opportunity.
“[Playing the outfield] is feeling more normal,” said Baty, per Bill Ladson of MLB.com. “It’s like when I played in Double-A. I’m having a lot of fun out there.”
Skipper Carlos Mendoza wants and needs Baty to be flexible and is excited to see how things look.
“It is good to see him in action here. He is feeling comfortable [in right field],” Mendoza said. “… [Being an all-purpose player] is going to be his role. It’s a valuable role. We’ve been pretty honest with him. He is on board. There are going to be at-bats for him in a lot of different positions. He could play third, second, and first, and now the outfield is in play.”
Moving from the infield to the outfield isn’t always easy. The reads off the bat, especially in the corners, make it the toughest positions in baseball, in my opinion. However, Baty is a good athlete and might be able to figure it out.
