New Report Suggests Giannis Antetokounmpo Open To Future With Celtics originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Celtics have been linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo in trade rumors, and he is reportedly on board with joining the Celtics.
Antetokounmpo is extension eligible this year, and no team is going to trade for him unless they feel like he will ink an extension with them. Otherwise, giving up a haul to see him hit free agency in a year would be a waste. While the Miami Heat are being seen as the favorites for him, The Athletic's Sam Amick reported on Friday that Antetokounmpo is reportedly open to the idea of an extension with Boston.
"If Antetokounmpo would be willing to sign the four-year, $275 million extension in Boston, as league sources indicated would be the case, the Celtics pose a serious threat to the Heat’s pursuit," wrote Amick.
If Antetokounmpo is truly open to signing an extension with the Celtics, they have a legitimate chance at getting him. Unlike the Heat, the Celtics have a superstar asset they can leverage for more draft capital to send to Milwaukee. Jaylen Brown would have to be dealt for salary reasons, and the Bucks could deal him for even more picks.
The Heat could present a strong package, but Antetokounmpo is reportedly concerned about the team's ability to compete after gutting their roster to acquire him. Thanks to Brown, the Celtics would not really have to gut their roster to get Antetokounmpo.
