The Boston Red Sox roster is dominated by young talent this season. From the face of the franchise, Roman Anthony, to starting infielder Marcelo Mayer, with Connelly Early in the rotation, and reliever Tyler Uberstine coming out of the bullpen. The Red Sox are reaping the benefits of their farm system.

This offseason, Boston acquired a player the Pittsburgh Pirates formerly thought of as the star infielder of tomorrow, Tsung-Che Cheng.

Cheng is a 24-year-old, left-handed batter who plays shortstop for the Worcester Red Sox. He was signed as an international player by the Pirates back in 2019, but did not play rookie ball in the United States until 2021.

Cheng then spent three seasons working his way up the minor league ranks for Pittsburgh, and even earned an early-season call-up to make his MLB debut for the Pirates in 2025, although he would finish the season in Triple-A.

Now playing alongside the likes of Nick Sogard and Kristian Campbell in Worcester, Cheng is proving to be an excellent addition.

Cheng is tied for the team lead in home runs hit with three in his first nine games. He is also leading in both slugging percentage and OPS.

On Friday night, he continued his impressive season, hitting for the cycle against the Columbus Clippers and helping the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory.
