BOSTON — On the day he was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take Marcelo Mayer’s roster spot, Tsung-Che Cheng will slot right into the shortstop position for the Red Sox.
Cheng will play shortstop and hit ninth against the Yankees and righty Will Warren on Friday night. The Red Sox will pair Cheng and second baseman Anthony Seigler in the middle infield. Elsewhere in the lineup, Mickey Gasper is leading off as the designated hitter and Connor Wong is catching. Caleb Durbin is hitting sixth for Boston after hitting a clutch homer in Thursday’s win.
Cheng, a 24-year-old defense-first infielder who joined the Red Sox as a waiver claim in February, will play his fourth major league game after making three appearances for Pittsburgh last season. He was 0-for-7 and is in search of his first major league hit. At Triple-A, the Taiwan native hit .254 with seven homers, 18 RBIs and a .776 OPS in 64 games.
The Red Sox will look to extend their winning streak to two games after taking Thursday’s series opener, 6-3. Payton Tolle is on the mound for Boston and will look to do something similar to his season debut, when he struck out 11 batters in six innings against New York on April 23.
First pitch set for 7:10 p.m. ET. The game is on NESN.
