The new home of the Oklahoma City Thunder is officially under construction.
Set to open in two summers, targeting the beginning of the 2028-2029 NBA season, The Continental Coliseum passed a major milestone this week when construction crews began pouring concrete this week for the substructure of the massive building.
Dolese Bros, an OKC based company, supplied the concrete for the first pour. The arena construction is being coordinated by Flintco Mortenson.
“Construction crews will begin placing the pier caps, along with two large mat foundations,” said Josh Patterson, the Flintco Mortenson Project Director. “Pier caps act like the 'feet' of the building’s deep foundation system, connecting groups of underground piers that serve as the 'legs' supporting the future arena.”
The entire construction team was wearing white hard hats emblazoned with the OKC Thunder logo. Other preliminary work on the arena is now under way as well.
“The earthwork, utility coordination, and foundation activities are setting the stage for the transition from site preparation into vertical construction later in the project schedule,” said Flintco Mortenson Project Executive Ellen Becker.
In recognition and celebration of the beginning point, the project partners put together a legacy capsule.
The official Thunder press release says that the capsule contains "Artifacts that tell the story behind Continental Coliseum and the community that made it possible. The capsule contains items that honor Oklahoma City's past, document this historic milestone and reflect the vision for the city's future."
Particularly interesting for OKC fans is the inclusion of the already iconic photograph "Hope Wins" by Thunder photographer Jimmy Do. The picture was taken during Oklahoma City's 2025 NBA Championship parade. Quoting the press release, the image "symbolizes the resilience, unity and optimism that define Oklahoma City and reflects the same community spirit that has inspired generations of residents to invest in the city's future."
The Thunder will play at The Paycom Center for the next two seasons. It's an arena that will be home to 20 years of OKC memories. Including the state's only major professional sports team hoisting a championship trophy. Oklahoma City's past and present will forever be fondly linked to a building originally meant to host a hockey team.
But the future is coming in the form of a 750,000 square foot, state of the art arena. And that future started earlier this week in the form of pouring a mixture of water, sand, gravel and cement.
