City and team officials will break ground next week on the new arena for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Construction is expected to be complete in 2028 and the arena is expected to be ready for the Thunder’s 2028-2029 regular season.
The arena will be built where the former Cox Convention Center previously stood between E.K. Gaylord Boulevard, Sheridan, Reno and Robinson avenues. Renderings show a 360-degree glass curtain wall with panoramic views from all interior concourses.
Details for the groundbreaking ceremony have not been released.
Construction will be spearheaded by Oklahoma-based Flintco, which previously built the Paycom Center and other notable Oklahoma projects like Devon Tower and the OKC Convention Center. They will also be partnering with Mortenson, a nationally recognized leader in sports and entertainment construction.
The stadium will be situated in the heart of downtown, adjacent to the iconic Myriad Gardens just northeast of Scissortail Park. Renderings provided by MANICA Architecture show an expansive Thunder Alley containing a private parking garage entrance for teams, VIP access and grand stairways leading into the arena.
The city and MANICA described the conceptual design as celebrating "the universal human connection fostered through sports and live entertainment, creating a shared experience that galvanizes and unites the community."
The 750,000 square-foot venue is set to include larger main concourses, more entertainment space and potentially wider seats with more leg room.

The final pieces of the Myriad Convention Center came down earlier this year.
Construction crews are removing the final pieces concrete slab of what used to be the parking garage.
According to the city, crews are also bringing in dirt to fill in holes where foundations have been removed.
