In recent weeks, four-star edge rusher Chaz Gray from St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey, has emerged as a rising target for the Washington Huskies.
After defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi secured a commitment from four-star defensive tackle Tevita Nonu, Jedd Fisch's staff has been able to turn its attention to the 6-foot-3, 250-pound recruit who is ranked as the nation's No. 33 edge rusher by 247Sports. On Friday, director of player personnel Jake Crawford took a cross-country flight for an in-home visit with Gray, the second time UW has checked in with him in May after inside linebackers coach Brian Odom dropped in on him at St. Joseph Regional earlier in the month.
The Huskies have locked in an official visit with Gray for May 29, one of three trips he has scheduled for the summer, including Clemson on June 12 and Tennessee on June 19.
On film, Gray looks like the ideal addition at outside linebacker for defensive coordinator Ryan Walters. He's a quick-twitch athlete who plays with good speed and patience when rushing the passer, showing off a deep arsenal of moves to shed blocks before closing quickly on opposing quarterbacks.
He also displays the versatility to move all over the formation, and while he has a frame that looks like it could add the necessary weight to act as yet another hybrid defensive lineman for Walters, his speed and fluidity as an athlete would be best utilized on the edge, where he could easily drop into coverage in some of the disguised pressures Walters likes to run.
Following Nonu's commitment, the Huskies hold three pledges along the defensive line in the 2027 class, including four-star defensive tackle Jon Ioane and three-star defensive lineman Matamatagi Uiagalelei.
