Newest Boston Celtics big man Chris Cenac Jr. fell further in the 2026 NBA Draft than he was projected, landing with the Celtics at the No. 27 overall selection of the first round after being mocked as high as just outside of the lottery. But Cenac had been seen as a top six recruit coming out of high school, so Boston may have gotten themselves the steal of the draft with this pick.
For the new Boston big, being taken by the Celtics was enough for the moment. "I'm really happy. I'm blessed that my name is called," said Cenac after his NBA home was revealed. "This has been a dream of mine my whole life, so for it to happen is very surreal for me, but I'm ready to get to Boston and get to work."
It was not the New Orleans, Louisiana native's first trip to the draft, however, and Cenac reminisced about when he was one of the young fans of the league with a dream imagining his own future in the league as he was cheered on by fans at the big event.
"I love the fans," he explained. "They're always showing love ... I like it a lot. It's crazy. I was probably their age when I came to the draft in 2018 with my mom and sister. Just to see them and they might have opportunity to be here in a couple more years. It's crazy how life works, but you've got to keep trusting yourself and putting the work in."
As for his new team, Cenac said, "I could come in and learn a lot from those guys; Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, all those guys over there. I'm going to definitely pick their brains all the time. I could learn a lot, and I'm looking forward to getting to Boston."
