THIS ARTICLE BROUGHT TO YOU BY FANDUEL

July 1st, 2026, marked the 15 year anniversary of the Nebraska Cornhuskers cutting ties with the Big 12 and joining their new neighbors north and east in the Big 10 conference. So this week, I figured maybe a poll was in order to see how everybody felt about it. Here was the question and choices:

July 1st, 2026, marked 15 years of Nebraska Cornhuskers membership in the Big 10. Are you glad we made the move?

A) Yes 100%. Huge financial upgrade, greater academic prestige & a much more stable situation. Osborn saw the Texas writing on the Big 12 wall.

B) Yes, but two schools with a bit of a different set of rules is a tad annoying. Also, the B1G scandals in that time period have been next-level awful.

C) No, it’s not been great for football & has never felt like the right fit culturally.

For Nebraska, it was a last straw situation, as Texas, with Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe acting as their figurative Renfield and cabin boy, had taken full control of the conference, who were happy to follow Longhorn whims while bowing to all of them with Nebraska as the dissenting vote. Tom Osborne tried to convince them Texas did not have their best interests at heart, but it fell on deaf ears and Nebraska scooted.

Things quickly went south for the remaining teams after that, beginning with the Longhorn Network throwing the balance of power completely out of whack as the others stood limply by. Today, only half of the original Big 8 AND Big 12 remain (with Texas scooting away after turning it to rubble) as it has become barely more than a G5 conference with a Texas Tech booster calling the shots and Monster Energy Drink patches ready to appear on all their jerseys this season for a mere $1.25M per school

The Big 10?

They have a conference TV network with a lucrative deal for the member schools and have risen to share the pedestal with the SEC for the richest and most powerful conference in Division 1. They persuaded the four most powerful PAC-12 schools to jump ship thus imploding that conference. And Nebraska sports have thrived in the new-look Big 10 with the glaring exception of football which has continued to struggle. Two straight bowl trips after 10 years without have left people just as irritated and wondering if they can ever reach Pelini-era levels again let alone the TO days.

So here we have been for 15 years now – how happy is everyone?

  • Almost half feel history has proven the right choice was made. 47% of you are all in on the Big 10.Nebraska is MUCH more financially secure, increased their academic standing and showed getting out from under the grip of the Longhorns and their store-bought commish was the way forward. Several other Big 12 schools soon made their way out as well after they too soured of feeling Texas hands on their shoulders while theirs gripped the sink
  • Though not to the Texas extent, 24% feel a little of that Texas residue in the way that Michigan and Ohio State appear to play by a different set of rules than their conference brethren (Friday football for me but not for thee?). But that’s still a 71% majority who feel it was the right move.
  • 29% miss the old Big 8/12 as football stalled following Bo Pelini’s exit and it just doesn’t feel like the same cultural fit as before
  • Of course, check out the current Big 12 roster and realize that the old culture is far gone from there as well these days.

  • However, Wisconsin inexplicably decided to bring in Shawn ’Little E’ Eichorst as their new AD against the advice of every Nebraska fan who did a double-take when they saw rumors of this were not coming from parody accounts.
  • Unless a great deal has changed in 10 years, Badger Faithful will wish they listened to their fans from the D and F categories above. Any actual job grade above those two will have to be considered a stunner.
  • “The Invisible Man” has already hit the ground running by talking about Wisconsin “swag” and selecting the Huskers’ godawful duct-tape numbered 2014 alt jerseys for the Badgers this season.
  • Just remember – WE TRIED TO WARN YOU.
