NBA Trade Rumors: Pistons 'Fully Expected' to Pursue $90,000,000 Superstar Interested in Teaming Up With Cade Cunningham

The Detroit Pistons have taken an aggressive approach this offseason, making moves to strengthen their roster around Cade Cunningham.

Among the big names linked to their efforts is Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant, who has become a focal point of the conversation.

Durant is in the later stages of his career, but he continues to perform at an elite level. The two-time champion has built a Hall of Fame profile that includes the 2014 NBA MVP award, 16 All-Star appearances, and 2 Finals MVPs.

That resume is a major reason why teams such as the Pistons remain interested in acquiring him.

NBA insider Brett Siegel recently shared new details on free agency, revealing that Detroit has been among the most aggressive teams pursuing Durant this offseason.

“Teams have called the Rockets this offseason to check in on not only (Alperen) Sengun but Kevin Durant as well,” Siegel wrote. “Among those who had inquired about Durant, the Detroit Pistons stand out…”

“Pistons executive Trajan Langdon has been very aggressive on the market to add championship-contending depth around MVP candidate Cade Cunningham this offseason, and Durant remains very high on the team’s list of potential targets.”

According to Siegel, the proposed framework would have sent Durant to Detroit, Alperen Sengun to the Boston Celtics, and Jaylen Brown to the Houston Rockets.

While discussions never progressed beyond the exploratory stage and Brown is now with the Philadelphia 76ers, Siegel noted that Durant has a genuine interest in teaming up with Cunningham, keeping the possibility of a future move to Detroit alive.

“Durant has always had high praise from the young superstar guard early in his career and has been on the record multiple times calling him a ‘special talent,’” Siegel added.

“If Durant becomes available in any capacity or the Rockets look at possible trades involving him either now or in the near future, the Pistons are fully expected to be at the front of the line to bid on his services.”

Durant joined the Rockets from the Phoenix Suns in July 2025 as part of a seven-team trade, and agreed to a two-year, $90 million extension with Houston in October. The deal is fully guaranteed, with an average annual salary of $45 million, and includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.

To add to this, there are growing questions about whether the Rockets actually intend to keep Durant through the end of that deal.

His long-term future at Houston has been in doubt, with off-court storylines and reports linking him to an X account that posted inappropriate comments about several NBA players, executives, and even members of the Rockets team.

Regardless of the controversies around him, Durant remained one of the league’s top performers last season. He averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 52.0% from the field and 41.3% from beyond the arc.

If Houston ultimately decides to move him or if Durant seeks a new opportunity, the prospect of joining forces with Cunningham in Detroit could become a realistic option.
