When the NBA offseason kicked off for the Detroit Pistons just over a month ago, there was no confusion that re-signing All-Star center Jalen Duren would be the top priority this summer for the team’s President of Basketball Operations, Trajan Langdon. Since that time, Langdon has indicated that he had no intentions to execute a sign-and-trade involving the big man, and it became obvious that the Pistons were going to match any offer sheet that JD signed.
That is, if Duren signed an offer sheet at all. But up to this point, Duren has not put pen to paper with any other club even though the 22-year old held meetings with both the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers brass. Once free agency opened, Duren and his representation spoke with both organizations, but talks have stalled since that time.
In fact, the Lakers committed a large amount of money to Walker Kessler, which is a move that realistically removed the Western Conference squad from the equation. The. Kings, on the other hand, have been a bit less active in the past few weeks, but they did make a move recently that could have trickle down effects on Duren.
According to James Ham of ESPN 1320, the Kings announced that they have officially waived veteran guard DeMar DeRozan for the final season of his three-year deal. DeRozan was due approximately $25 million for the upcoming season, but only $10 million of that total was guaranteed for the 2026-27 campaign.
As a result, Sacramento will be able to jump below the luxury tax line once again since they are able to spread that amount over the next three years. So, how does this impact the Kings’ interest in Duren?
Considering the Kings, who went 22-60 last season, held a meeting with Duren right when free agency opened, it is apparent that there is interest between that party and JD. And since the Kings have the opportunity to save some cash in the short-term by waiving DeRozan, there is a possibility that Sacramento could opt to re-engage with Duren in terms of either an offer sheet or as part of a larger sign-and-trade with the Pistons.
Now, the Pistons would obviously need to agree to any trade before shipping Duren off to the West Coast, which puts the impetus on the Kings to make the prospective trade worth Detroit’s time. In terms of assets, the Kings could reasonably part ways with center Domantas Sabonis, who averaged 15.8 points and 11.4 rebounds last season, but the crux of that possibility is that the big man was only healthy enough to play in 19 games last year, and he lacks the quality on the defensive end that the Pistons covet.
Apart from Sabonis, the Kings could offer up Zach Lavine, who is a talented scorer with considerable three-point range, but he has battled his own fair share of injury woes throughout his career. Lavine would check two boxes that the Pistons are looking for with his perimeter shot and overall scoring ability, but those qualities can only benefit the team when he’s on the court, and that’s a legitimate question mark in and of itself for the 31-year old.
If the Pistons were to agree to a sign-and-trade with the Kings, perhaps the most valuable assets that Sacramento could offer would be their future first round draft picks. Even though Duren is a powerful double-double machine, he’s not the type of player that would be expected to single-handedly turn around the entire Kings franchise, so Sacramento would likely continue to have their first-rounders fall in the lottery range moving forward.
So, even if a potential Duren-to-Sacramento deal falls on the less-likely side, it is an option that Langdon should flesh out in order to see if there’s a fit to be had between the two cross-conference organizations.
