With the NBA offseason still ticking along, the Detroit Pistons have not had too much activity as late ever since the Summer League started. However, the Pistons have their final contest in that tournament slated for later tonight against the Miami Heat, but there is a possibility that the end of the Summer League could mark a return to the active market for Detroit.
Along those lines, NBA Correspondent Marc Stein reported within the last 24 hours that the Detroit Pistons could be interested in pursuing DeMar DeRozan after the shooting guard was waived by the Sacramento Kings over the last couple weeks. At the time, Pistons Roundtable wrote about whether the fact that DeRozan was waived could lead to a rejuvenated push for the Kings regarding Jalen Duren since they had a little more financial flexibility to work with, but this latest possibility is another trickle-down ramification that is at least worth considering.
At this point in his career, DeRozan is not as spry as he once was, but that is okay because he would not be called upon to do the heavy lifting in the Motor City alongside Cade Cunningham, especially if the Pistons can bring Duren back on a long-term basis as well. In that scenario, DeRozan could slot in as a still-productive veteran presence who can go out there and find his own shots with or without Cunningham on the floor, so that quality checks one box that Detroit was liking to fill entering the offseason.
Last year, DeRozan, who stands at 6-6, put up 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in his 17th NBA season as a pro, so it is clear that he still has enough talent to contribute positively, and that impact would be even more welcomed on a squad with two All-Stars already in the fold.
So far this summer, the Pistons have acquired sharp-shooting guard Isaiah Joe from the Oklahoma City Thunder via trade along with stretch four John Collins, Taurean Prince and Gary Harris as part of a massive six-team deal. All four players are efficient from beyond the arc, so their presence alone helps boost the Pistons’ ability to hit three-pointers on their own.
As for DeRozan, the longtime vet does not excel in that category with a triple-hitting rate just over 30%, but that would not be why he’s brought into Motown if both sides could agree to a deal, which very well could be a veteran minimum given the other business still on Detroit’s books. And since DeRozan missed out on the opportunity to win an NBA Championship with the Toronto Raptors, there is considerable reason to believe that he could be persuaded to take a more team-friendly deal in order to land in a good situation where a winning culture is already established— something that simply was not the case in Sacramento over the last two seasons.
From a durability standpoint, DeRozan has featured in 77 games in each of those two years with the Kings, so his body is not breaking down at this point, but he’d likely enjoy the chance to make one more run at a title before calling it quits on his prolific career. The Pistons could use his scoring ability, so it could be a decent match on paper depending on how negotiations proceed between both parties with the reality of Duren’s looming deal floating in the background.
