For the first time since June 3, the Washington Nationals have dipped back under .500. And for the first time since March 31 through April 5, the Nationals have now lost at least four consecutive games after opening the road series against the Baltimore Orioles with a 3-1 loss.
Yet after the pitching staff has been the source of the problems all week, Friday night marked a lack of scoring production after turning just five hits into one run while stranding four on base and going 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
James Wood, Curtis Mead, Dylan Crews, Jacob Young and Keibert Ruiz all recorded one hit each in the loss with Ruiz recording the lone RBI.
In his first loss of the season, Andrew Alvarez also tossed five strikeouts and three walks while allowing a pair of earned runs and six hits in 4.1 innings. Brad Lord also allowed the game's final run while tossing five strikeouts and allowing a pair of hits in 2.2 innings. Zak Kent, fresh off being recalled to replace Gus Varland on the roster, closed out the game by tossing a pair of strikeouts and allowing one walk in one inning.
The Nationals didn't reach base until the third inning, which came on a throwing error before James Wood notched a traditional hit with a leadoff double in the fourth, which set up a scoring chance. Curtis Mead following up Wood's double with a double that pushed Wood to third with no outs, but an Andres Chaparro grounder, CJ Abrams pop up then Dylan Crews groundout materialized into nothing.
That mattered, because the Orioles would end the scoring drought in the bottom of the inning after a Coby Mayo leadoff double did materialize into a successful scoring opportunity. Alvarez loaded the bases on a six-pitch walk before an RBI single to left field drove in a pair of runs.
Washington would strike back the following inning after Keibert Ruiz's single to center drove in Jacob Young, who got on after a double into left field.
With Lord on the mound in the seventh, Mayo would then double into left field to account for another run while the Nationals failed to get anyone on base over the final two innings.
Washington will look to bounce back on Saturday with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Foster Griffin is set to take the mound as the Nationals look to avoid their second road series loss of the month.

Final: Orioles 3, Nationals 1
The Nationals have the lowest walk rate in MLB this month and chased again. Alvarez, Lord and Kent were solid today, but it can't stop a four-game skid. They fall under .500 for the first time in three weeks.
Record: 41-42
