The Washington Nationals are officially back at .500 overall after dropping the series at home against the Miami Marlins in a 7-3 finish, marking a weird yet humbling loss as the team moved to 12-19 at home in the loss.
Miles Mikolas dropped to 1-5 in the loss after allowing four earned runs across 5.1 innings, but it was a peculiar outing after Mikolas opened the game by retiring the first seven betters as the two teams combined for zero hits through the first five innings. Yet then came the meltdown after allowing three earned runs and two walks to let the Marlins break the game open, only for Mikolas to end his night by retiring eight straight.
That meltdown materialized in the fifth inning after the three straight solo home runs, first a 410 foot home run to center, then a 403 foot shot to center, then 414 foot blast to left field, was enough for the Marlins' offense on the night.
Washington's first hit of the night came in the bottom of the sixth inning after Drew Millas and Jacob Young opened with consecutive singles before a fielder's choice courtesy of Luis Garcia Jr. was enough to drive in Ruiz, delivering the first run for Washington of the night.
The Nationals added to it in the seventh as the contingent of Nationals' fans going 'tarps off' in the stands grew. CJ Abrams opened with a single into left field before a single
courtesy of Daylen Lile put a pair of runners on with no outs before a Dylan Crews infield hit cut the deficit in half. Jorbit Vivas' grounder would strand the runners before a pitching change hoped to get Miami out of the inning, but Keibert Ruiz drove in the third run on a grounder to first.
With the tying run at third, Blake Butera's head scratching move to pinch hit Jose Tena for Jacob Young backfired after a strikeout ended the inning with Washington still trailing, 4-3.
The Nationals would threaten in the eighth inning after Luis Garcia Jr. hit a triple with one out, but it materialized into nothing after Curtis Mead flied out and CJ Abrams ended the inning with a strikeout.
It would be the closest Washington would get the rest of the way after the Marlins tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth inning, cementing the 7-3 finish.
Drew Millas also left the game in the sixth inning of the loss after being ruled out due to a left upper lip laceration following a collusion at third base.
With the loss, Washington will look to avoid its first sweep at home this season when the two teams meet for the series finale on Wednesday. Andrew Alvarez is expected to make the start with first pitch set for 1:05 PM.
