One of the top coaches in the SEC is sticking around for the foreseeable future.

On Sunday, Alabama's Nate Oats signed a contract extension that will reportedly make him one of the top-five highest-paid coaches in the sport. Athletics director Greg Byrne confirmed the deal in a statement, adding that the contract will be formally approved by the board "soon."

"Nate Oats has signed a new contract that will make him one of the top five compensated men's basketball coaches in the country," Byrne said. "Appropriate members of the board of trustees have been notified of the proposed terms of the new agreement and it will soon be formally approved through the board process."

The agreement comes in the wake of Oats' name surfacing in relation to the open North Carolina job.

The terms of the extension, including the duration and average salary, are not currently known. Oats made around $5 million on his current deal — signed in 2024 — this season, per the USA TODAY Sports coaching salary database. That deal was set to expire in 2030 and would have paid him $7.75 million in the final season.

Oats, who is 51, is entering his eighth season as Alabama's head coach. Hired in 2019, Oats has a 170-73 record, leading the Crimson Tide to a Final Four in 2024 as well as an Elite Eight and three Sweet 16s, most recently this season.
