There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the Michigan basketball job this week, and with Nate Oats' name once again being linked to a high-profile opening, Alabama fans were understandably paying attention.
They can officially relax.
During an appearance on ESPN Radio Thursday night, Oats wasted no time shutting down the rumors and making it crystal clear where his future lies.
"I've known Warde Manuel for a while, but they've got a coach," Oats said. "I'm very happy where I'm at in Alabama. I've got a pretty hefty buyout for a good reason because I don't plan on leaving here... I will not be in maize and blue if that's what you're asking."
That's about as definitive as it gets.
Whenever one of college basketball's premier jobs becomes available, Oats' name inevitably enters the conversation. It's a testament to what he has built in Tuscaloosa. Since arriving at Alabama, he has transformed the Crimson Tide from a program capable of making the NCAA Tournament into one that expects to compete for SEC championships, Final Fours, and national titles every single season.
That success naturally attracts attention from blue-blood programs looking for their next head coach.
Michigan became the latest after Dusty May departed for the NBA to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. With the Wolverines searching for leadership, many wondered if they would make a run at Oats, especially considering his ties to athletic director Warde Manuel.
Instead, Oats made it clear that Michigan already has a coach in Mike Boynton, who is set to lead the program this season, and even went a step further by saying continuity would be the smartest decision for the Wolverines given the roster they've assembled.
More importantly for Alabama fans, Oats reiterated that he has no intention of leaving the Crimson Tide.
His comments shouldn't come as a surprise.
Alabama has invested heavily in its basketball program over the past several years. From one of the nation's premier practice facilities to elite recruiting resources, NIL support, and unwavering commitment from athletic director Greg Byrne, Oats has everything needed to continue chasing championships in Tuscaloosa.
The results speak for themselves.
Under Oats, Alabama has become one of the nation's most respected programs, consistently landing top recruiting classes, attracting impact transfers, winning SEC championships, and making deep NCAA Tournament runs. The Crimson Tide are no longer trying to earn national respect, they've already earned it.
That's exactly why Oats mentioned his contract buyout. It wasn't just a passing comment. It was a reminder that Alabama made a long-term commitment to him because both sides envision building something special for years to come.
College basketball coaching rumors will never disappear. As long as Oats continues winning at an elite level, his name will surface whenever a prestigious job opens.
But on Thursday night, Alabama's head coach delivered the answer Crimson Tide fans wanted to hear.
He's happy in Tuscaloosa.
He's committed to Alabama.
And if anyone in Ann Arbor was hoping otherwise, Oats left absolutely no doubt.
"I will not be in maize and blue."
Sometimes, that's all that needs to be said.
