A frightening incident brought out a lengthy caution during Saturday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Lime Rock Park after rookie Thomas Annunziata’s truck caught fire, forcing him out of the race and sending him to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Annunziata, driving the No. 07 Toyota for TRICON Garage, was running inside the top 10 when smoke suddenly began pouring from his truck before flames erupted from underneath the vehicle. He quickly brought the truck to a stop on the grass as safety crews rushed to the scene.
The 20-year-old climbed from the truck under his own power before emergency workers extinguished the fire.
Shortly after the incident, TRICON Garage released an update confirming that Annunziata was awake and alert.
“Thomas Annunziata is awake and alert and being transported to an area medical facility for further evaluation.”
Veteran NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass later reported that Annunziata had been taken to a local hospital for additional evaluation following the frightening fire.
Before the mechanical issue, Annunziata had been enjoying one of the strongest Truck Series races of his young career.
The rookie qualified near the front of the field and spent much of the afternoon racing inside the top 10 before the fire abruptly ended his day. NASCAR officials credited him with a 30th-place finish after completing 79 of the scheduled 100 laps.
The incident occurred with 21 laps remaining and immediately brought the race under caution as crews worked to secure the truck and clean up the scene.
Fortunately, Annunziata was able to exit the vehicle on his own before being evaluated by medical personnel.
While Annunziata’s condition became the primary concern following the fire, the race eventually resumed and concluded with Grant Enfinger earning the victory.
Landen Lewis finished second, followed by Kaden Honeycutt, Parker Kligerman and Christian Eckes to round out the top five.
NASCAR has not yet provided any additional update on Annunziata beyond TRICON Garage’s statement that he was awake and alert while being transported for further medical evaluation.
