The Chicago White Sox landing Munetaka Murakami on a two-year, $34 million contract will likely go down as the deal of the offseason for 2026.

Despite a handful of teams doubting Murakami's ability to make consistent contact in the big leagues and thinking it could render his undeniable power irrelevant, the 26-year-old Japanese slugger has burst onto the scene in Major League Baseball. He hit 20 home runs in his first 200 at-bats with the White Sox and was recently named to the MLB All-Star Game and MLB Home Run Derby.

Murakami's presence in the White Sox lineup has been a big reason why the club entered the All-Star break with a 50-45 record and in first place in the AL Central. And he'll continue to be a big part of this team as it makes a playoff push in the second half.

But the elephant in the room with Murakami has always been the length of his contract and whether the White Sox will be able to keep him in town long term. Getting the initial deal done with Murakami is one thing, and the White Sox deserve a ton of credit for that. But the fear has always been that he would blossom into a superstar, then leave the White Sox for a more lucrative offer when he hits free agency.

Murakami brings enough to the table, both on the baseball field and off it, through the international marketing and publicity that comes to the White Sox as a result of having him around, that letting him leave would be deemed by many to be an unforgivable mistake. And the pressure just cranked up a notch on White Sox ownership.

Munetaka Murakami Wants To Stay In Chicago

While speaking to the media at the MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia, Murakami was asked to reflect on his decision to join the White Sox, an organization that had lost 100-plus games in three consecutive seasons before his arrival.

“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. We have a winning squad and we’re just gonna keep continuing,” Murakami said.

Murakami was then asked if he would like to stay with the White Sox long term.

“Of course, yes,” he promptly responded.

"It's the best decision I've ever made."

Now, it is of course worth noting that Murakami and the White Sox have not had conversations about specific terms for a contract extension. But now that his interest in signing one is public knowledge, it ratchets up some of the pressure on Chicago to make that a reality.

He's one of the best power hitters in baseball. He's a fan favorite in Chicago. And on the business side of things, what he brings to the team from a branding and viewership standpoint makes extending him a no-brainer decision. Murakami's comments should be music to the ears of White Sox fans, but at least for the time being, the clock is ticking on Chicago to get it done.
