Munetaka Murakami’s return off the injured list is a point of excitement for Chicago White Sox fans as the team wraps up the first half with a weekend series against the Athletics.
Chicago needs Murakami now more than ever, both for his bat and his energy, after an uninspiring series that ended in a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox earlier in the week.
But Murakami’s return to the starting lineup on Friday night isn’t the only thing for White Sox fans to be excited about. The 26-year-old Japanese slugger has been named to the American League All-Star team and has also been announced as a participant in the 2026 Home Run Derby.
Friday evening, before the White Sox kicked off their series against the Athletics, a graphic flashed on the scoreboard at Rate Field that appeared to announce Murakami as a participant in both the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game.
Without an official announcement from the team or Major League Baseball, it was initially unclear what to make of that information.
But even if it was leaked in an unconventional way, things are now official. Murakami is replacing Byron Buxton on the American League All-Star roster and taking the final spot in the Home Run Derby.
With 20 home runs in his first 200 career at-bats, Murakami would have been a no-brainer for both the All-Star Game and the Derby had he not landed on the injured list for more than a month. A hamstring strain at the end of May sidelined Murakami for six weeks. But once he returned to the field on a rehab assignment, it didn't take long for him to rejoin the White Sox.
While injury concerns are certain to be top of mind for White Sox fans, both Murakami and the team clearly feel confident in where he's at physically if he's willing to participate.
Murakami's selection to the All-Star Game makes this the first season since 2022 in which the White Sox have had multiple All-Stars. He joins Miguel Vargas as the team's representatives and adds another layer of excitement to the upcoming week, which also includes the 2026 MLB Draft and the White Sox holding the first overall pick.
The Home Run Derby will take place Monday night at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, with the All-Star Game following on Tuesday night. Murakami and the White Sox have been one of baseball's biggest stories in 2026 and will once again be in the spotlight during All-Star Week.
