MT. ZION, Ill. (WCIA) — Greg Blakey will leave a historic resume with his retirement coming at the end of the current high school softball season.

He has more than 800 career wins with 20+ conference titles and two trips to state. Blakey ranks in the top 25 in career wins in all-time across the country and fourth in the IHSA coaching win rankings.

While he’s done lots of winning in his 35 years as head coach, he hopes his impact is about more than wins and losses.

“You hope you teach them a little bit of softball, but you hope to teach them some life skills and life lessons,” Blakey said. “Life’s pretty tough, and sometimes you have to teach kids how to grind it out in order to be successful, and you hope that goes to softball and you really hope it transfers into life as well.”

“He’s definitely going to be missed next year,” Mt. Zion athletic director Diann Durbin said. “Wonderful person, wonderful coach, and we’re really, really happy with all the years that he’s put in and dedicated his time here to Mt. Zion.”

Blakey said he plans to stay around softball following this season to watch his granddaughters play.
