The Spartans suffered a disappointing loss on Saturday night, but they're still considered a lock to be a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
In college hockey, the NPI rating system is utilized to select and seed the 16 teams that'll make the NCAA Tournament. Unlike college basketball, it's a more rigid system that makes it clear which teams will and won't make the field and how they should be seeded -- with the selection committee assisting final placement to avoid conference matchups and other oddities.
Well, with that being said, we can confidently say Michigan State will be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to the NPI Probability Matrix on College Hockey News. The updated matrix has Michigan State landing as the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
For some perspective, Michigan State would be paired with UMass based on this current projection and model. This, of course, will change by the time Selection Sunday hits next weekend, but gives you an understanding of the type of team the Spartans could face in the first round.
Michigan State has no more games remaining until the NCAA Tournament, finishing the regular season with an overall record of 25-8-2. The Spartan won the Big Ten regular season title for a third straight season this year, but fell to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Saturday.
