Michigan State hoops is back on Monday night, with an intriguing non-conference matchup against an impressive offensive squad in Cornell. So does Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal believe they'll get the win?
The Spartans will play their first game in nearly 10 days on Monday, with Cornell coming to the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich. This will be the Spartans' final non-conference game of the regular season and could pose some challenges for top 10 Michigan State.
Michigan State comes into this game with a record of 11-1 and wins in their last three games. The Spartans are heavy favorites in this matchup and expected to win going away.
Cornell may be huge underdogs, but they are dangerous on the offensive side of the floor. The Big Red are one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, which has helped lead them to a 6-5 overall record so far this year.
So does Couch believe the Spartans will come out of the holiday break with a victory over the Big Red? Yes, he does but he also knows Cornell has the ability to make things interesting with their impressive three-point shooting -- here's a bit of his analysis and reasoning:
"Cornell doesn’t just make a lot of 3s. The Big Red take a ton, too — averaging more than 34 attempts per game. They’ve got five players shooting better than 40% from long range who’ve attempted at least 30 3s already this season, paced by leading scorer Cooper Noard, who’s already attempted 83 of them, making 34. Noard is a terrific player and headlines a dangerous backcourt offensively.
"... For all of the problems Cornell can create offensively, the Big Red have some shortcomings — size, defense and, in a matchup like this, rebounding. Cornell will press and take chances defensively. It’s hard to imagine that style being deployed with any success against MSU."
