Randy Johnson's agent believes his client should receive an extension within a week.

"There's no question in my mind that this should be done before Opening Day (March 31)," Barry Meister said. "I probably sound optimistic, but I feel it's a question of when rather than if."

Johnson faced a makeshift Cubs lineup that included four left-handed hitters.

Bellhorn, a switch-hitter, hit a 95 mph fastball that landed well over the fence in left-center despite going into a strong gust.

After the first, Johnson scattered three hits over the next five innings while stretching his pitch count to 97.

He worked out of a jam after allowing a leadoff triple to Hee Seop Choi in the sixth by striking out Bellhorn and Lenny Harris and inducing Ramon Martinez to hit a soft fly to left.

"My next start (Wednesday against Oakland at Phoenix Municipal Stadium) will need to be the one I feel I can walk away from that one like I'm in control of every thing," said Johnson, who finished with seven strikeouts.
