Happy Monday, everybody. Hope your weeks have gotten off to a great start.
We are still in the college sports dead period, so let’s dig around and find some Miami Hurricanes’ related nuggets to discuss.
1) Who wants to talk more about Keionte Scott’s pick six against Ohio State? Everyone? Ok, cool, let’s do it.
Scott running past Jeremiah Smith and snaring Julian Sayin’s pass heading for Brandon Innis is undoubtedly the play of the year for the Hurricanes. It gave Miami a vice grip on their biggest win of the season and sent us all into a run-around-the-living-room frenzy.
Scott talked about that play this week on the “Caps Off Podcast”.
Scott talking about how he knew what was coming based upon how often they keyed on it and how much it was hammered home by the coaching staff to them is what is so telling to me here.
How often have we seen Miami’s defensive coaching staff outcoach and play an opposing offense for a fool? Honest question? Over the last two-plus decades, so, so, so, SO often we’ve seen opposing quarterbacks read Miami’s defenses like a book and pick them apart.
Big time credit to Corey Hetherman and the rest of Miami’s defensive staff for how well they had Miami prepared last year, both from a technique/fundamental perspective as well as scheme.
And oh yeah, I also wonder which Ohio State alum Scott was sticking his tongue out at LOL.
2) Donte Wright got bumped up to the top cornerback in the 2027 class by Rivals in their rankings.
So, that’s pretty cool, I suppose. He’s the No. 4 overall player and top player in California by their rankings; he’s No. 10 overall, No. 2 corner, and No. 1 player in Cali for 2027 in their industry rankings.
In any event, he should be a tremendously impactful player for Miami when he gets on campus, and it appears as though he’ll likely be arriving as the highest rated player in both On3 Sports/Rivals and 247 Sports’ composite rankings.
3) Hurricanes baseball had four players drafted, and Daniel Cuvet, not surprisingly, was the first player taken.
I am a bit surprised it took until the fifth round for him to get snagged, when the Washington Nationals turned the card in for him. It’ll be curious to see where he ends up positionally, whether he stays at third or not, but his bat and power will be his calling card on his way to the majors. Teams find ways to get guys on the field somewhere who can rake.
Alex Sosa (Rd 6 to the Athletics), Ryan Bilka (Rd 10 to Cleveland), and Rob Evans (Rd 12 to San Diego) also were drafted. I’m a little surprised Evans didn’t go higher. The lefty was crafty last year for Miami.
