May 27—WARSAW, Poland — Mitchell's Rickey Nelsen competed at the International Powerlifting Federation World Classic Bench Press Championship on Monday in Warsaw, finishing in sixth place in his division for the second consecutive year.
Nelsen, who was competing in the 66-kilogram Master 1 weight class, had one successful lift at 125 kilograms (275.58 pounds), before failing to complete his second and third lifts at 132.5 kilograms, or 292.11 pounds.
The 44-year-old was competing in the world championships for the second time in a row. He won the Powerlifting America Bench Press Nationals championship for his division and defended his title in January in Las Vegas. At that time, he set the South Dakota state record with a raw bench press of 130 kilograms (286.5 pounds), which bested his own state record in the Open and Masters (M1) divisions.
The second and third lifts on Monday would have given Nelsen a new personal best and state record and tied for fourth place in Warsaw with France's Mehdi Houas, who lifted 132.5 kilograms, which Nelsen failed to lift twice.
The division was won by Finland's Tapio Peltokangas, who had a top lift of 140 kilograms. Silver went to Ossi Gronlund, of Finland, who lifted 137.5 kilograms, and Amir Reza Mesforoosh, of Iran, earned bronze at 135 kilograms.
More than 1,300 athletes are taking part in the world championships, which run through May 31.
