While there will certainly be some trades in the draft, they are too difficult to predict...so I just included the trades that looked reasonable for the Cardinals to make. Whiz and RG were raving about the depth in this draft especially at the Cardinals' positions of need and thus I was already thinking that if the players the Cardinals want at #26 are off the board and the Cardinals had a chance, they would move down from #26---and the way the board looked at #26---it did look like the players the Cardinals would have liked at #26 (Graham, Odrick, Hughes, Jackson) were already off the board---so I have them moving down and then they get another offer to move down just a few spots that is too good to pass up. So, here goes:

Hope you get the time to read each pick. I put a lot of thought into each one.

For example, I had A.J. Smith (San Diego GM) taking NT Cam Thomas instead of Terrence Cody and my reason was that Thomas is a better athlete and Smith was tired of trying to get Jamal Williams to get his weight down and would fear the same with Terrence Cody.

If you have any questions about what the decision on a pick was, please ask. Obviously, it would have taken me all night to add comments with each pick.

I do think that unless you want Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow, and Hughes and Odrick are off the board, it makes real sense to trade down if the Cardinals have the opportunity to. And with teams trying to get these QBs and especially with Clausen sliding, the trade opportunities should be there.

Hope you enjoyed it.

This takes a massive amount of work. Well done.

But there's no way the Cards pass on Sean Weatherspoon once much less three times. Certainly not for a 225 lbs weakling like Washington.

So our picks would be

ILB Daryl Washington
NT Terrence Cody
WR Mardy Gilyard
LB Rennie Curran
CB/PR Javier Arenas
G Mitch Petrus
CB Akwasi Owusu Ansah
QB John Skelton
OLB Arthur Moats
ILB Josh Hull
S Cody Grimm

I dont know what to say Mitch other then i like this a lot and would be very happy if we traded down in this manner. The first trade down scenario seems quite likely though the second one looks less likely as to many variables have to happen to generate number the interest trading partner and two one willing to give up quite as much.

I really like a lot of these picks and ive already explained several times that i like Washington, Cody, Joseph, Owusu-Ansah, Moats, Grimm and Gilyard. You have to flip Washington for Weatherspoon though there is no competition there although i guess you are gonna say he dropped because of the ''loud mouth'' rumors .Im not high on Arenas but think he will do allright but in this scenario i would prefer another linebacker as are depth is very thin there and with the pick of AOA there is less of a need to pick another CB. But i would LOVE this draft to happen and the amazing depth and variety of quality we would get would be awesome. Good job Mitch.

I gotta say we seem to agree on a lot of players, i guess great minds think alike :D

That's a LOT of work Mitch, great job.

I have to get some stuff done so I won't be able to see you response until later tonight.

IMO Cody won't fall until our 58th pick. Chiefs, Bills and Dolphins will all be on look out for him. Don't think the Dolphins will trade back up but still....

IMO AOA won't last until the 123rd pick but it isn't unlikely.

Thrilled that you picked up a true NT and then a potential NT in Joseph. Worse case scenario is that he plays DE for us, great depth etc.

I read somewhere that Holgrem isn't thrilled with Shaun Rodgers so maybe he is included and they don't give us as many picks.

Why would Houston take Williams? They have Frank Okham and Sean Cody but no cornerbacks.

I thought long and hard on that one and seeing as the Cardinals had Washington in for a visit, I think he's the player they want. I could be wrong, though. Either way, the Cardinals would get one of the best WILBers at #41 and wouldn't have to reach.

Well done Mitch.

But idk if SF will take Jermaine Gresham, IMO they already have a great TE. Why do you think they take him here?

Round 2 I think we take Benn, IMO hes will be great I know we will get more picks but this kids a stud.Could Daryl Washington slide to 48?

Thanks, Monty. I've been really enjoying your posts. Very insightful and well put together.

You can flip Weatherspoon for Washington...as I just said to K9, becuase the Cardinals had Washington in for a visit, I think they want him.

I'm fine with either pick.

I made a mistake coping my notes...in my original draft I had NT Linval Joseph at #88 because I didn't think we could get Cody at #58. And then I forgot to change it.

Thus I changed the pick to Rennie Curran as a nice compliment to Washington. I love Curran---so that's more my own thinking there.

So, Monty (and everyone)---what do we do with the #88 pick?

3-4 DE Earl Mitchell, Arizona? I think the Cardinals would go in his direction.

I read that Houston is not happy with Okham and Cody and that they want someone who can collapse the pocket better...and I have them taking CB Patrick Robinson in Round 2.

I think they have their sights on Jared Odrick...but I have the Giants taking him at #15, thus I thought they would go with the next best DT.

Cardinal Call: I think---and have been thinking this on other mocks---that the 49ers love the thought of playing their 2 TE sets...they tried it with Delanie Walker opposite Vernon Davis and Walker wasn't the threat there they wanted. With Gresham, imagine what a nightmare it would be to try to defend the 2 TE set for trying to stop Frank Gore AND be ready to cover both Davis and Gresham. Yikes! Because they wanted to do this last year, I think they will be all over Gresham.

I like Benn too a lot...but I could not see Washington sliding past the Giants at #46, let alone him making it to #58.

Dude, how do you find the time to do all of this?

I really like the Trades you have the Cards make. I'm not sold on the picks however.

Why do you have the Niners taking a TE in the first round?

Wow, Mitch. I mean, wow! THIS is the kind of post to pour your time and energy into, and I appreciate these far more than some of the more outlandish ideas. I mean, I disagree and think we'll take 'Spoon, but damn, I cannot argue against what you've done here. Well done.

That just seems way to high to make a luxury pick like a TE when you already have a stud TE on the roster. I think if they land Davis like you suggest then they go defense with their second first rounder. Either a CB or a Safety.

Thanks, Stout. I'm fine with Spoon as well. It was a tough choice, seeing as the Cardinals appear to be very interested in Washington.

What would be fun to do if you have the time MadCard, is make your own choice based on what players are available at what spots.

I was trying to pick the players I think the Cardinals are interested in.

But, teams have to see who is on the board and then things could change. Like a couple of years ago they didn't expect to see Calais Campbell on the board with their 2nd round pick and they scooped him up asap.

Yeah I was planning on doing that with your board and trades.

I agree that players tend to rise and fall on draft day. That's what makes it such a fun event to watch.

Good stuff Mitch.

I think Washington is the guy for the position, even if he is "weak". If John Lott can put weight on DRC he can put it on anyone. :D

I really like this mock draft, if it happened to pan out this way I would be very happy.

Nothing about trading down, it's a great idea, but the new draft schedule format SUCKS OUT LOUD! Think about it...if we have to wait a few hours just to find out that we traded out of the first round, so then we have to wait until the next day for our first pick? ARGHHH!

:edit: I won't even get to see the first few picks of the draft because I'll still be at work and then on my way home. Good job NFL.

:rantover:

Looks good Mitch.

I think the Rennie Curran pick is not a bad one though it could be a slight reach considering he is generally considered a 4th round and onward type pick but id be happy with considering the combination of picks you would have. I dont see A.J. Edds, Pat Angerer or Donald Butler as picks selected before 88 so they would be options there and i personally think Edds would make a very good SILB in a 3-4 so he would be a player id consider before Curran at that spot.

I love the double threat TEs.

I got another question, why don't you just apply to NFL to be a sportswriter?

Great job.

You know, cardinal call, I wonder if Whiz is thinking the 2 TE double threat to spread the front seven for Beanie?

Not sure if he would tab Gresham at #26...but maybe Gronk at #58?

Rugby...I'm looking forward to your postion analyses again after the draft. Thise were great!

Washington is a little taller and a little quicker at stepping up than Spoon...but Spoon may have a little better range and man cover skills.

It's a tough call. May come down to intangibles and how well the Cardinals liked their visit with Washington.

Monty, what's your take on Donald Butler? I've read so many conflicting scouting reports on him. Harry said he hears the Cardinals like him. I just haven't had the sense he is on the Cardinals' radar. Do you?

To the board: any insights on ILB Donald Butler, Washington?

The rap I've heard is that he's a fine athlete who's not as tough as you'd want playing the inside.
