SPRINGFIELD, BELIZE - AUGUST 2: Mennonites, an Anabaptist Christian community known for traditional practices, conservative lifestyle and large-scale farming, are seen in the community of Springfield, Belize, on August 2, 2026. Mennonites, who make up nearly 4% of Belize's population, play a major role in the country's agricultural production, particularly in poultry, dairy and crop farming, making them central to Belize's food security. Many farms in the community rely on manual labor and horse-powered equipment, while some Mennonite families also maintain nurseries where they grow trees and other plants. At the same time, the expansion of Mennonite commercial agriculture has been identified by researchers as one of the factors contributing to forest conversion for agriculture in Belize, alongside other drivers. While the extent of Mennonite communitiesâ contribution to forest loss remains difficult to quantify, satellite data show that Belize lost approximately 350,000 hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2025, representing about 20% of its 2000 tree cover area.
