The Minnesota Twins defeated the Houston Astros 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The Twins' lineup did enough to help the ball club while Joe Ryan led the way on the mound. Ryan performed well once again, and he is continuing to build his trade value.
Of course it remains to be seen if Minnesota will even make him available for a potential trade. At just 23-27 overall, the Twins could certainly sell at the trade deadline. If Ryan is made available, he will instantly be one of the most popular trade candidates in the game.
Ryan allowed only one run in his six innings of work on the mound on Wednesday. The Twins star pitcher struck out nine hitters while walking no one and surrendering four hits.
Ryan previously exited a start against the Toronto Blue Jays due to elbow soreness. Any time an elbow injury is mentioned with a pitcher, there is often reason for concern. However, Ryan seems to be fine.
According to Dan Hayes, Ryan has allowed three earned runs in 18 innings since the injury scare. He has 21 strikeouts as well during that span.
Ryan now holds a 3.02 ERA in 11 outings. He has struck out 61 hitters across 56.2 innings of work during the '26 campaign.
There are a few starting pitchers who will unquestionably draw attention at the trade deadline. Ryan will become one of the most popular candidates if made available as mentioned.
Ryan does have a mutual option for the 2027 season. There is a chance that he enters free agency following the '26 campaign. Any team that acquires Ryan would understand he may be a half-season rental. If Ryan can help a contender make a World Series push, then making the trade could make sense.
The Twins' bullpen followed Ryan's performance with three scoreless innings. Meanwhile, the offense scored four runs on six hits. Victor Caratini recorded two hits and a home run, while Ryan Kreidler added a home run and three RBI.
Minnesota is now set to begin a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Friday. The road series will be difficult, but perhaps the Twins will carry momentum from their 2-1 series win against the Astros.
The Twins and Red Sox series will begin on Friday night at 7:10 PM EST in Boston as Minnesota looks to earn another big win.
