Injured Twins C Ryan Jeffers recovering, prepping for trade deadline move originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Will the Minnesota Twins be sellers at the MLB trade deadline?
Following Sunday's 9-3 defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park and the announcement of the starting rotation losing another quality arm, it appears Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll could start targeting moves for the future and begin fielding calls for injured catcher Ryan Jeffers, one of the league's top trade deadline candidates.
Starting pitcher Joe Ryan is another name Zoll could dangle if the Twins' current five-game losing streak extends for another week or two.
Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers could be on move at MLB trade deadline
With Sunday's loss, the third-place Twins (27-33) fell 6.5 games behind the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians, but were just two games back of a crowded AL Wild Card chase.
Sidelined since May 18 with a broken left hamate, Jeffers, 28, was expected to miss up to two months. Before the injury, the seven-year veteran posted a career-best .295 batting average through 37 games. He's a career .243 hitter and ranked No. 7 in the league with a .408 on-base percentage, another career-best effort.
One of the top players at his position, Jeffers, who is making $6.7 million this season, will be a free agent next winter.
As the Twins continue to sink in the AL standings, Zoll anticipates Jeffers returning in time to show league-wide scouts that he recovered from the May 20 surgery.
As the top-rated catcher on the trade market, Jeffers could soon be sold to the highest bidder.
