Miles Russell finished strong on July 9 in the first round of the PGA Tour ISCO Championship in Louisville, Ky., with a pair of late birdies that got him well within striking distance of the projected cut line.
Russell, a 17-year-old amateur from Jacksonville Beach with veteran caddie Paul Tesori of St. Augustine at his side, overcame a double-bogey at the par-5 seventh hole and bogeys at the par-4 eighth and 11th of the Hurstbourne Country Club to play his final seven holes at 2-under with no additional bogeys to post a 1-over 71.
Russell finished in a tie for 97th, eight shots behind four past PGA Tour winners tied at 7-under 63: Lucas Glover, Steven Fisk, Stephan Jaeger and Troy Merritt.
Russell lagged behind his two playing partners, Ben James (65) and Jackson Koivun (67). The cut line at the start of the second round will be 1-under. Russell, James and Koivun will tee off No. 10 at 8:39 a.m.
After making a bogey on the fourth hole (Russell hit into the left greenside bunker, blasted out to 5 feet, and missed the par putt), he birdied No. 5 on a 37-foot putt.
But a tee shot into the water on the right at No. 7 led to a double, and Russell missed a 15-foot par attempt on the next hole, going to 3-over.
He bounced back with a 16-foot birdie putt at No. 10, bogeyed the 11th from the fairway (missing for par from 14 feet) but righted the ship and played flawless golf after that.
Russell made a 6-foot putt for birdie at No. 15 and a 16-footer for birdie at No. 16. He hit the last two greens in regulation and two-putted for pars.
Russell, playing in his seventh PGA Tour event and 14th pro tournament, hit 7 of 14 fairways and 9 of 18 fairways.
Before he teed off, the United States Golf Association announced that Russell was among the first four players to make the Walker Cup team, along with Tyler Watts, Ethan Fang and Preston Stout.
The Walker Cup, matching amateur teams from the U.S. vs. Great Britain/Ireland, will be Sept. 5-6 at the Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland. Russell will be making his debut in the event, which began in 1922.
