Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach became the youngest player in First Coast history to compete in a men's professional major championship at the age of 17 years, 7 months, in the U.S. Open June 18-21 at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

He then became the second-youngest to make a U.S. Open cut since World War II, after Beau Hossler in 2012 at the Olympic Club.

Russell was one of five amateurs to make the cut, and he finished third among those players. Jackson Koivun, the three-time All-American at Auburn, and Ryder Cowan, a senior at Oklahoma, tied for low amateur at 5-over (tied for 23rd place).

Russell played with Koivun in the final two rounds. Russell shot 4-over 144 in those two rounds and Koivun was 2-over 142.

Russell saved his best score for the fourth round, posting an even-par 70 with three birdies and three bogeys. He also delivered the best Father's Day present of the day when he arranged to have his father Joe carry his bag to the 18th green after hitting his approach shot.
