New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has completely shifted the culture in Foxboro since coming on in February of 2025.

Not only is his presence attractive to free agents, but his respect around the league is also showcased by the coaches he is able to fill his staff with.

Even a position as small as a defensive assistant has been filled by Shane Bowen, who spent his previous five seasons as a defensive coordinator.

Vrabel expanded on Bowen's role on the coaching staff.

"(Younger coaches) can go to Shane, ask him and rely on him to fill in the gaps, maybe while some of the other coaches have something going on or they’re meeting with players," Vrabel said of Bowen.

He also opened the door to having Bowen, who does not have a true assignment, help out on the other side of the ball as well.

"I think having another guy that has called plays in this league and has game-planned will be able to provide assistance offensively," Vrabel said.

First-year defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr told Mike Reiss that he is looking forward to having another person who has been there before inside the building.

"He’s another great sounding board,” Kuhr said. "You know he’s going to give me the true, honest answer. There’s a deeper relationship there."

Coaching follow-up: In his role as an analyst on the Patriots’ staff, former coordinator Shane Bowen is assisting the defense and some of its younger coaches such as Kevin Richardson and BJ Edmonds, according to Mike Vrabel.
