Longtime San Francisco Giants color commentator Mike Krukow will retire following the 2026 season, ending a legendary era for Giants broadcasts.
Krukow has been part of the Giants booth since 1990, serving as a full-time broadcaster since 1994. A seven-time Emmy Award winner, Krukow is perhaps best known for his partnership with Duane Kuiper, whom he first met as a teammate on the 1983 Giants.
In 2025, Krukow and Kuiper ranked third in Awful Announcing’s MLB local broadcast rankings. In the seven years Awful Announcing has run these rankings, Krukow and Kuiper have finished first four times.
Krukow, who is 74, is retiring due to physical complications caused by inclusion body myositis, a degenerative muscle disease he has been battling for 20 years.
“I don’t want to quit,” Krukow told NBC Sports Bay Area in a phone interview. “Unfortunately the rules change, first from year to year and then month to month and now it’s day to day. It’s becoming unsafe. My home in Reno is much safer and it really is the determining factor in how I can’t do games anymore.”
Krukow’s health has limited his ability to travel. He has called road games remotely in recent years and uses a wheelchair and golf cart to get around Oracle Park in San Francisco.
According to NBC Sports, while Krukow is done calling games, he still hopes to be involved with the organization.
“I would just say thank you for letting me sit at your dinner table every night and share dinner and share the Giants and just share the vibe,” Krukow added to NBC Sports. “That’s where I’m going. Next year, when the first game happens, I’ll be sitting right there on the sofa next to Mario Alioto and Mike Murphy and all of the people that have retired over the years.”
Giants President and CEO Larry Baer announced that the Giants will have a celebration for Krukow at Oracle Park on Sunday, September 27, prior to their final game of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“With his beloved and inseparable partner Duane Kuiper, he has taught generations of fans about baseball, brought us inside it from the perspective of a Major League pitcher, and called every game with incredible insight, unmistakable humor and genuine heart,” Baer said.
While the Giants have struggled mightily in recent years, their success in the 2010s, which saw them win the World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014, will forever be associated with Kuiper and Krukow in the broadcast booth.
