The New York Knicks currently sit awaiting their opponents in the NBA Finals after quickly dispatching the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games during the Eastern Conference Finals. After leading the franchise to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999, Knicks head coach and former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown revealed a valuable lesson he learned from Warriors head coach Steve Kerr when it comes to playing a deep rotation.
“You know, Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich—they were guys that went deep into their bench, and they both always used to say, ‘It's not about now; it's about the postseason,’” Brown said after Game 3. “You keep guys engaged by doing that, and you do develop not just the bench but the team as well, because guys get used to playing with other guys, just in case someone goes down.”
This strategy is the near opposite of former Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau, who was often criticized for playing such a small rotation in New York. Additionally, the strategy is very similar to that of Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault, who may oppose the Knicks in the finals. Either way, it's clear to see that Brown continues to lean heavily on his experience with coach Kerr when he worked as his assistant with the Warriors for six seasons in between his head coaching jobs with the Cavaliers and Kings.
