It wasn't pretty, but Michigan State got the senior day win over Rutgers on Thursday.
The Spartans had a lackluster start and nearly disastrous finish, but luckily dominated the middle portion of the game en route to a 91-87 victory over the Scarlet Knights. Michigan State pushed a narrow one-point lead at the break to a 19-point advantage late into the second half. But a fierce rally from Rutgers in the final minutes got the game within one possession in the final seconds.
Michigan State got big-time performances from a number of key starters, including Coen Carr and Jeremy Fears Jr. who each finished the game with 21 points. Seniors Jaxon Kohler (15 points) and Carson Cooper (14 points) also put up double-digit scoring efforts in their final game at the Breslin Center.
With the win, Michigan State improved to 25-5 overall and 15-4 in Big Ten play. The Spartans have now locked up a triple-bye in the Big Ten Tournament and will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed next week.
