Could a potential Michigan reunion be in store in the NBA? Yaxel Lendeborg sure hopes so.

On the eve of the NBA Draft, news broke that Dusty May is leaving Michigan after two seasons to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, who hold the No. 9 overall pick.

That just so happens to be around the range where three of May’s players — Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara — are projected to be selected at the earliest in the first round on Tuesday night.

"I'm going to tell him he better pick me up," Lendeborg told reporters at a pre-draft event on Monday. "If he doesn't, I'm going to be mad. I might block him.

“It would be amazing being able to stick with him. Me, Morez and Aday, we talked about it and we’re all going to be happy for him regardless. But if we get an opportunity to play for him, it’d be awesome.”

Yaxel Lendeborg said he fell down to his knees when he saw the Dusty May news.

I asked him about his chances of joining his college coach in the pros:

Lendeborg added it’d be even better if May could field an all-Michigan lineup and find a way to fit outgoing seniors Nimari Burnett and Roddy Gayle Jr. into the Mavericks’ plans.

“I’m just super happy for (May) and I’m proud that he got what he wanted,” Lendeborg said.

Johnson and Mara echoed Lendeborg’s sentiment but acknowledged they were also stunned by May’s departure two months after he guided Michigan to its first national title since 1989.

“I’m happy for him and the opportunity that he got. I don’t think nobody knew so we were all shocked,” Mara told reporters.

Added Johnson: “I didn’t see it coming. I’m excited for him.”

During his two-year run at Michigan, May led the Wolverines to a 64-13 record, two Big Ten titles and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. They also made history along the way, setting a program record with 37 wins and a Big Ten record with 19 conference wins this past season.

Mara believes May will have similar success at the next level.

“He’ll be good,” Mara said. “Just by being with him one year I knew he was able to do that, be an NBA coach whenever he wanted. He’ll be great.”
