Michigan AD Warde Manuel sends strong message of support to Kyle Whittingham originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Michigan Wolverines are undergoing a new era in Ann Arbor. To do so the right way, they are putting all their eggs in one basket by their hiring of Kyle Whittingham last winter.
Whittingham, who will enter his first season in Ann Arbor this fall, has received exceptional praise from AD Warde Manuel for the job he has done thus far regarding the program's identity.
In doing so, Manuel told ESPN's Pete Thamel about why Whittingham is the right play for the program's long-term success.
"I always aim for steadiness, believe me," Manuel told reporters at the Big Ten spring meetings. "This is not anything that I've desired or wanted or hoped for, but I deal with it, and then you know my goal as a leader is to provide the steadiness to the rest of the department, and my staff, and student-athletes, and I think I and we have done that as a department in the organization. I don't take any of it lightly."
Having that "steadiness" is why Manuel suggests that the way Whittingham carries himself is what the Wolverines need long-term.

"Listen, the vibe's been awesome," Manuel said. "And I take the cue from a lot of our student-athletes and their feedback about how things are going. They really enjoy Kyle, the staff and the way things are going."
Despite speculation that the Wolverines may do their own thing as college football continues to progress, Manuel said he is happy with where things stand in the sport overall.
"You know, the world changes," Manuel said. "You just have to be prepared, but I'm happy and Michigan is happy being a part of the Big Ten."
We'll see if Manuel continues to praise Whittingham as the season draws closer to fruition. But, for now, things appear status quo.

"My goal is to limit the impact that it has on the great people that we have in our department," Manuel said of past program faults. "But we deal with it. And we learn from it. And we get better. That's what I've always tried to do. That's what I was taught to do by my mom and dad, and Bo Schembechler and a lot of great leaders along the way."
For now, only time will tell.
