Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel's future is in doubt, according to multiple reports late Sunday, July 12. A U-M Board of Regents meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, although without an agenda attached.
An announcement on his future is expected in the coming days, according to reports. The Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, previously reported that higher-ups at Michigan have been briefed on law firm Jenner & Block's nearly $12 million investigation into the athletic department.
The investigation into Manuel and the athletic department was sparked by Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore's firing on Dec. 10 for having an inappropriate romantic relationship with former staffer Paige Shivers. Moore was sentenced to 18 months probation and two misdemeanors for trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device for his actions in the aftermath of his firing, although he had other charges — including a felony — dropped.

Manuel, Michigan's athletic director since 2016, has overseen a slew of recent scandals at Michigan, including Moore's firing, former football assistant Connor Stalions' elaborate sign-stealing scheme and former co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss' stolen identity scheme that saw him steal private videos and photos of over 3,300 students across the country, mostly women. Manuel signed a five-year contract extension through 2030 in 2024.
Manuel has recently made big hires in athletics, landing former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham as Moore's replacement, along with elevating former top assistant Mike Boynton as men's basketball head coach following Dusty May's departure for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. Manuel has won major national titles in both football and men's basketball during his tenure, along with national championships in men's gymnastics and women's gymnastics in 2025 and 2021, respectively.
Michigan has undergone recent administrative changes, too. Former president Santa Ono left the university to pursue the same job at the University of Florida, although his candidacy was rejected despite being the lone finalist for the role. Michigan has since hired Domenico Grasso, who was hired in 2025.
Manuel's 2024 contract extension made his among the highest-paid athletic directors in college athletics, paying him up to $2.4 million per year. His extension was set to keep him at Michigan through 2030.
