The North Carolina Tar Heels made a splash in the men's basketball coaching world on Monday. Right before the National Championship Game in Indianapolis, news broke about UNC hiring Mike Malone as the next head coach. The former NBA champion replaces Hubert Davis, who was first after his fifth season in Chapel Hill.
Less than 24 hours later, Malone's contract details were leaked. UNC will pay him double what Davis was making with a 6-year, $50 million contract on the books, according to WRAL's Brian Murphy. That's roughly $8.3 million per year. This is on par with the offer that was reportedly presented to Arizona's Tommy Lloyd.
The deal Davis signed last year was reportedly a 6-year, $25.5 million and expired in 2030. North Carolina owes Davis $5.3 million in a buyout, according to multiple reports.
Can confirm from ESPN sources that Michael Malone is set to average more than $8.3 million per year on his six year deal. That will put him among the top five highest in the sport, as Bill Self made $8.8 million this year. @murphsturph first reported. https://t.co/ttywkOiVUH

This was a significant boost for the program and Malone, who became the second highest-paid in the nation under Kansas' Bill Self at $8.8 million per year.

For UNC, to get a coach of Malone's caliber at this point is a great hire. There will be a bit of a learning curve in the NIL era, but this will pay off by winning in March.
